The wash sale rule costs investors $1000's every year. If you sell a stock at a loss and buy it back within 30 days before or after the sale, the IRS disallows that loss. This applies across ALL your accounts. Including IRAs. If you sell at a loss in your brokerage and buy the same stock in your IRA within 30 days, the loss is gone. Most people find out the hard way during tax season. Bookmark this before April 15.
