@mpersandy

@HoneybadgerLA’s sillier half. Somewhat of a parenthetical. Often doubts his own commitment to Sparkle Motion. Doesn’t know if he has enough cicada strength.

This announcement arrives hours after our investigation (newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…) described how OpenAI dissolved its superalignment and AGI-readiness teams and dropped safety from the list of its most significant activities on its IRS filings—and how, when we asked to speak with researchers, working on existential safety, a representative replied "What do you mean by 'existential safety'? That's not, like, a thing."

(🧵1/11) For the past year and a half, I've been investigating OpenAI and Sam Altman for @NewYorker. With my coauthor @andrewmarantz, I reviewed never-before-disclosed internal memos, obtained 200+ pages of documents related to a close colleague, including extensive private notes, and interviewed more than 100 people. OpenAI was founded on the premise that A.I. could be the most dangerous invention in human history—and that its C.E.O. would need to be a person of uncommon integrity. We lay out the most detailed account yet of why Altman was ousted out by board members and executives who came to believe he lacked that integrity, and ask: were they right to allege that he couldn't be trusted? A thread on some of of our findings:

1) Ryan Grim pushed two fake sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden in 2020. 2) A lesser reported fact about 2020 election interference: Russia targeted both liberal women AND journalists w/ misinfo related to Joe Biden & sexual misconduct. We also know Russian propoganda aimed to sow discord among liberal feminists more broadly. Do you remember being called a "rape apologist" for doubting Tara Reade. Some of this vile stupidity was organic, some of it was not. That's how Russian interference works. Maybe Grim's just a useful idiot. Who knows. And who cares. We know his work mirrors not only Russian propoganda, but very specific Russian smear-campaigns. That's all we have to know to decide not to listen to him. brennancenter.org/our-work/analy…

You think? @jaketapper a few months ago tried to pass off a short text message exchange with Trump as an exclusive in depth interview. The press has completely lost touch with their role to inform the public.
Roger Sollenberger@SollenbergerRC

It’d be helpful for news consumers if reporters published the full audio and transcripts from these random Trump phone interviews. I don’t think anyone has

The Hasan Piker and "Joe Rogan of the left" stuff is really weird because the entire point of Joe Rogan was that he (for a while, anyway) had a lot of crossover appeal and was seen as apolitical. If anything, Piker is the left's Charlie Kirk or Candance Owens. At best.

Ignoring the content produced by attention-gamers can sometimes be the most significant consequence anyone can deliver to a content producer in the attention economy To everything, there is a season A time to denounce, and a time to ignore (Turn, Turn, Turn🎵 1965 😂)
Magdi Jacobs@magi_jay

I agree. I also think we can strategize around this somewhat. We can point out bad faith actors until we feel we've effectively done whatever convincing we can do. Then we move on and ignore them. This is easier said than done, but it is possible. Piker is the first test case.

@magi_jay Unfortunate, but true, is your advice about "keeping it up" — because to a fault, some folks working at political desks in newsrooms take cues about what topics are "relevant" to political news audiences based on online chatter A crappy, unhelpful cultural dynamic, but real

@magi_jay p.s. Also unfortunate is the reality that some political desks determine a topic's "relevance" based on its click-generation potential Why a for-profit biz model for covering public governance isn't the best for serving a mission of more effective and ethical public governance

We can keep it up. These people have not helped us once. They do not care about fascism. They care about money, attention, and internet psychodrama. We believed these people had power over us for far too long. They don't. They're losers.

For the 1st time in 10 years, Democrats have finally gained some power over the psychopathic-election-sabotaging faction of the online "Left" & we did it by telling them they do not matter. I've never seen them act this way before. They keep ranting but the deflation is palpable.

Time to really pin down the ecosystem on major online forces that harm the Democratic party. There are several interacting factors. -The left-to-center of the political spectrum argues amongst themselves online; the right does not; The media responds to this Relatedly: -The mainstream media thrives on intra-Dem discord -The celebrity "Leftist" market also thrives on intra-Dem discord -Russia exploits intra-Dem discord All of this creates an ecosystem where in Democrats are constantly arguing, either with one another or with the celebrity online "Left," etc. Or, if we're not arguing, we're in constant defensive, rather than offensive, mode. Our time eaten up by correcting lies, etc. This, among many other reasons, is why it is *paramount* to recognize which forces thrive off of this environment, as well as how to change our own behaviors. A reason to hope: Since 2024, dynamics have changed among "Normie Democratic" users of twitter. We've become more tolerant of small differences with one another. I believe we've also become more "human," less streamlined, a bit braver, etc. This makes us less vulnerable to amplifying discord or falling into fracture. It also makes it less easy for foreign actors to exploit our differences and drive us into endless argument and depression. It's not just about Hasan Piker. It's about gaining control over all of these forces--including our own behaviors--that have caused harm to our electoral prospects. Piker et al. are toxic in their views. They're also toxic because they form branching nodes of intra-Left/Liberal discord. They poison the entire ecosystem. That is how they derive their life-force, both psychological & financial. Through poison. Lots of opinions on what the "Democratic party needs to do" about specific issues. But, on the very broad level, "What the Democratic party needs to do" is avoid fracture. That doesn't entail avoiding disagreement. Just fracture. If a person or other entity has shown themselves to be an agent of fracture, their influence needs to be marginalized.
