@ptr_to_joel being a dad motivated me into sobriety and skill acquisition that I would have scoffed at 5 years ago.

i got this really fucked up doubly linked list problem in an interview that I couldn't solve and it bugged me so much that I just rehashed the most common linked list problems and concepts into my brain over the last few hours spite is a powerful motivator

@AdamRackis so easy. nullbeach.com is hosted there. I am not a web dev and even my dumbass could figure out how to deploy a rust back-end via docker container. "it just works"

I was really nervous about an interview I had this morning but my fundamental knowledge of DATA STRUCTURES came through. I was really nervous about getting hit with some terrible leetcode gotcha variation on a theme but ultimately the DS part of DS&A was the key to success today.

@GrunerMonzon You're so right, it's a pain in the ass. I think sometimes we engineers become desensitized to crappy DX. What ends up happening is investing time in some custom scripting/flow to make it smoother. It's ok for me, bc I like to tinker - but maybe we can do better as an industry.

@nullbeach I ultimately blame the DX. Having an env properly setup for a debugger is hard: everything built with symbols, optimizations disabled, suppression files, etc... Getting a debugger to be useful is probably more time consuming for them than troubleshooting with prints.

I have no idea how these people solve complex bugs in a convoluted system without a debugger. I come from an embedded/OS background, there's no way I'm going to printf myself out of a corner. It has its place, and is a great way to find out where you need to set a breakpoint lol
trav@techsavvytravvy

it's a new era of slop specialists; output optimizers. there is no "domain expertise," only grind and ship. i don't use a debugger regularly, but they aren't as easily replaced by print statements once you're dealing with lower level code or multithreading.

When someone who's been interacting with #Linux for over 20 years starts talking, I listen. A fascinating discussion that starts with #dbus and ends with thoughts on the future of utilities like #systemd and other systems software that should probably be written in #rustlang. Last few touches to go, then the episode should appear in your podcast app later today. timclicks.dev/feed/podcast/c…
