This afternoon year 9 had to build the tallest tower that could support a 100g mass, using 25 art straws and 1 metre of sellotape. The competition was intense. A great afternoon!

Year 10 have been studying refraction since the internal examinations. Here is a demonstration that really makes them think about how refraction explains what is being observed. The little beads in the beaker are aqua gel beads and water is being poured into the container.

More photos of year 8 investigating the factors that affect the strength of an electromagnet. Danish scientist Hans Christian Ørsted discovered, in 1820, that electric currents create magnetic fields. British scientist William Sturgeon invented the electromagnet in 1824

Our year 8 returned from their end of year exams to normal lessons today. In Physics, they were given the challenge of building the strongest electromagnet. Their competitive nature was clearly in evidence during the lesson.

ARCHIVED - NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover
Step by step, the #MarsHelicopter Ingenuity is getting ready to drop to the surface. Once it’s all unfolded, with four legs down, I’ll be able to cut it free.

Swing low, sweet helicopter... @NASAPersevere is slowly and carefully deploying the #MarsHelicopter, Ingenuity. The tech demo is currently unfolding from its stowed position and readying to safely touch down on the Martian surface. See upcoming milestones: go.nasa.gov/ingenuity

For British Science Week our KS3 studnets were asked to produce a poster about innovation. They could describe an innovation from the past or present or an idea of their own. One student produced a poster on the thought processes that are integral to innovation. Excellent work.

Year 9 have been studying Nuclear Physics. They have been looking at how chain reactions are used and controlled in nuclear power stations. They used tongue depressors to model a chain reaction and made a 'cobra weave stick bomb'. #atockbroktoday #STEM #nuclearphysics
