Finally got around to testing the Kelly Criterion on a simple BTC momentum strategy.
The Kelly Criterion is simply a mathematical method used by gamblers and billionaires alike to determine the exact amount of capital to risk on an opportunity to ensure maximum growth with minimum chance of total failure.
I tested three different ways to size my positions on a simple Bitcoin momentum strategy:
• Fixed 10% per trade:
Gave +77.5% total return, with a maximum drawdown of -8.7%
• Full Kelly (capped at 25%):
Delivered +297% return, but with a bigger risk of -20.7% max drawdown
• Half Kelly: +1,388% total return with 0.00% max drawdown during the entire test period
On a log scale chart, Half Kelly completely outperformed the others.
Lesson learned: Good risk management beats being greedy.
Who else is using Kelly (or fractional Kelly) in their trading?

Spent two days learning change of basis (worth it).
The same vector can have different representations depending on the basis used, kind of like two people saying the same thing but in different languages.
The vector itself remains unchanged, just how you describe it.
WHY THIS MATTERS IN ML AND QUANT
Basis change is the core idea behind:
- PCA(principal component analysis) -> changes to a basis aligned with your data’s variance directions. Used constantly in ML for dimensionality reduction
- Eigendecomposition -> changes to a basis of eigenvectors to simplify transformations
- Portfolio optimization -> rotating to uncorrelated risk factors
Math is hard.
Math is patient.
Math rewards persistence.
If I can get the click, so can you ❤️

@davidpereIsHIM I used to be a big fan of calculus until i came across linear algebra and it’s applications in machine learning. It’s still kind of hard to pick one though, but as i keep learning i guess i will find one to stick with soon.
If you have one i would love to hear it
