In early April 1945, the Soviet armies stood on the threshold of Berlin. Within weeks, they would fight their way into the German capital and raise the red flag over the Reichstag—an image that would become one of the most iconic photographs of the war. What is less often spoken of, at least in polite company, is what accompanied that march. As the Red Army pushed westward through East Prussia, Silesia, and into Germany itself, it advanced not only as an army of conquest, but as an army shaped by years of devastation. The memory of what the Germans had done in the Soviet Union—millions dead, cities burned, civilians starved—hung over the advance like smoke. Discipline, already strained by total war, often gave way. What followed was one of the largest waves of sexual violence in modern history.. . Historians such as Antony Beevor estimate that up to two million German women were raped during the Soviet advance. In Berlin alone, studies suggest roughly 100,000 victims, many assaulted repeatedly. Women of every age were targeted—teenagers, the elderly, and children. In many cases, assaults were carried out by groups and continued over days. Pregnancies followed. Hospitals and aid organizations recorded a surge of so-called “occupation children,” while many women sought abortions under desperate and dangerous conditions. Suicide rates rose sharply in the aftermath. The violence did not stop there. Men suspected of resistance were often shot. Entire neighborhoods lived in fear as Soviet units moved through. There are also accounts—far less systematically documented—of young boys being abused. This was not invisible to the Soviet leadership. Orders were at times issued to restore discipline, but enforcement was inconsistent and often ineffective. When the Yugoslav communist leader Milovan Djilas raised the issue with Joseph Stalin, he later recalled Stalin brushing it aside, suggesting that soldiers who had endured such a war might seek “a little fun.” The remark, recorded in Djilas’s memoirs, speaks less to formal policy than to a grim tolerance of barbarism. None of this erases what the Soviet armies accomplished. They shattered the Third Reich. They bore the brunt of the war in Europe. They liberated camps in the east and pushed the Nazi regime to its end. But liberation, in 1945, did not look the same to everyone. We were stationed in Bamberg, Germany for over 5 years. When the base closed down in 2014, it devastated the local economy. Now it’s a housing center for illegal immigrants and the once beautiful city looks like a third world shi!hole and the locals are stuck between letting their city die or letting the illegals kill it. Pull our troops home and let Europe deal with the consequences of their actions.
