#FindOutFriday Soda water was bottled as early as 1806. Bitterquellebottles, like the one pictured here, are some of the most found in the US. This olive-green Hunyadi Janos bottle has been dated between 1870 and 1900 and has a blob finish made using a post-bottom mold.

This is a NEHI soda bottle, produced by the Chero-Cola/Union Bottle Works company founded in 1905. The NEHI Cola entered the market in 1924 and had many different flavors. This bottle still has its label intact and has been dated to 1960. It is still on the market today.

#FindOutFriday Milk glass was first introduced in the 16th century and became a quick competitor of porcelain. This is a jar made by Elmo/Elmo Sisters, a beauty company founded in the early 1900s. It was likely a beauty cream. Archaeologists have dated this jar to 1919-1929.

This is a Bromo-Seltzer bottle manufactured by the Maryland Glass Corporation for the Emerson Drug Company. Bromo-Seltzer was said to cure ailments such as hangovers, headaches, and upset stomachs. This cobalt blue bottle has been dated between 1915 and 1921.

#FindOutFriday According to the Society for Historical Archaeology, one of the best sources for determining bottle types based on the shape are old glass/bottle maker’s catalogs. This jar was in the 1933 Owens-Illinois Glass Company catalog and listed as a “modernistic” jar.

Answer: Owens-Illinois Glass Co. began in 1929 and produced billions of bottles during its 80-year history. This amber non-food related household bottle was dated by archaeologists to 1933, 1943, or 1953 using its unique maker's marks and identifiers.
