My father moved from Sri Lanka to Germany in 1982. He was 18 years old at the time. He didn't speak German. His English was poor and he wasn't educated either. Unable to find a job in Germany, he started knocking on doors. He looked for wealthy-looking houses and asked the owners if they had a job for him. It was the only sentence he could speak in German: "Haben Sie eine Arbeit für mich?" One day, a wealthy man offered him a job maintaining his big garden. Although my father only had to come once or twice a week, he came every day on his bicycle to check on the garden. Later, he started worked for a coal power station. Today, more than 40 years later, he's almost retired. He has paid off a house and has a substantial amount in savings. My father is living proof that you can achieve anything, and he is my greatest inspiration! And goddamn, he was a mogger!

Fascinating piece by @Shubhrastha on the imperative to feminise foreign policy. The argument is both similar to and different from @NMenonRao’s piece. My disagreement with both though is that IMO women tend to get “hypermasculine” in realpolitik. Banadaranaike, Gandhi, Meir, Thatcher, Bhutto, Meloni were/are seen as much tougher, cold & calculating than their male counterparts. They IMO essentially “outman” the men. I say this in policy terms - not in gender where each of them were the absolute pinnacle of feminine grace firstpost.com/opinion/why-wo…

RIP Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik. He was MCA president for 17 years (1986 to 2003), making him the longest-serving president in the party's history. He briefly became BN chairman for about one hour in 1988 when UMNO was deregistered. He chaired a meeting, accepted the new UMNO into the coalition, then handed the position back to Mahathir. He changed the MCA by shifting its leadership from mainly Chinese-educated to more dual English/Chinese-educated professionals. Many people remember him for helping to establish UTAR, which is seen as his biggest legacy. However, during and after his time, MCA lost a lot of support from the Chinese community. I'm amazed that cannabis doesn't grow wild in Malaysia. It has the right weather and conditions to do so. Plus the plant is literally a weed and hardy. With all the cannabis smoked in Malaysia, its surprising no seed escaped into the wild.

Cannabis grows wild in Japan in many areas, but 80% of it can be found in the northern island of Hokkaido. The government and civilian volunteers put in a huge effort to eradicate such cannabis plants, but it is literally impossible to remove millions and millions of plants each year.
