@comet_melting I haven't played Mixtape myself, so I can't speak on the rest of the game, but the reaction to that sequence must be representative of Something. What that something is I can only infer.

@comet_melting I don't make videogames, but I do make TTRPGs, which live in a different space. However, my experience with them and with players has led me to conclude that confusion on a player's side is often The Sign to look for that something isn't working. nofail can be confusing sometimes

people really don't like it when there's no failure states in a game huh

@comet_melting Knowing that you can skip past the genre by not engaging in it makes it less engaging, I think. And I think that's why people are upset about it. /end

@comet_melting I think Unbeatable's story mode not having fail states is one example of that expectation being broken. If you don't follow the rhythm adequately, the expectation is failure, as there is a logical followthrough from the genre that you Should Be Doing The Rhythm.
