Today is International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. For over 400 years, millions of African people were forcibly taken across the Atlantic and subjected to slavery. Today, we remember the victims and honour their resistance.

On 21 March 1960, police opened fire on a peaceful protest in Sharpeville, South Africa, against apartheid pass laws, killing 69 people. This massacre reminds us that combating racism means confronting it everywhere. #InternationalDayfortheEliminationofRacialDiscrimination

ALPHA Education is honouring Black History Month by highlighting the lives and legacies of Black Canadians who shaped this country’s history. Today, we remember Africville, a historic Black community in Halifax that became both a symbol of injustice and of strength.

On this day, the Battle of Singapore began. The invasion led to Japanese occupation, forced labour of POWs, and mass violence against civilians, including the Sook Ching massacre. War is more than battles; it destroys lives, dignity and human rights.

#OTD In 1945, the Manila Massacre began. Over one month, an estimated 100,000 civilians were killed, nearly 10% of the city’s population, making it one of WWII’s deadliest episodes in Asia. What does remembering Manila ask of us, as civilians continue to suffer in wars today?

Today, we remember the victims of the Quebec City Mosque attack and reaffirm our commitment to action against Islamophobia and othering-based actions that foster hate. At a time of rising Islamophobia, remembering and educating are vital to combating othering and hatred.

On a day of Holocaust remembrance, ALPHA Education honours all victims and people who suffered racialized violence.

On MLK Day, we remember Dr. King’s leadership in the U.S.Civil Rights Movement and his later work addressing economic inequality and the impacts of war.

Since Jan 8, 1992, survivors of Japanese military sexual slavery have gathered every Wednesday to demand remembrance, accountability, and justice. Today, we remember their courage and resilience.
