It was 34 degrees in the UK yesterday, the hottest May on record. The UK governmemt should make air-conditioning mandatory in all hotels, restaurants, shops, cinemas, trains, buses, shopping malls and anywhere in doors and it should also be installed now as a matter of course in all new builds. The UK weather has changed and buildings have not caught up. @ClaireCoutinho @KemiBadenoch @ZiaYusufUK

I also eat fried food… but seeing this long queue at The Fries Empire, Chandigarh made me pause for a second. Every few steps in our cities, there’s a new fried-food outlet, a new craze, a new must-try snack. And the lines just keep getting longer. It’s not about blaming the business they’re succeeding because we are choosing this stuff, day after day. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: India isn’t just urbanising… we’re quietly adopting Western eating habits and the health consequences show. In the United States, nearly 49% of adults are overweight or obese, contributing to widespread lifestyle diseases and increasing health costs. In India, though the percentage is lower today, the trend is climbing around 29–30% of adults now fall in the overweight category, and in urban pockets that number can be much higher. We’re eating more fried, more processed, more sugary, more convenient food than ever before often without realising how quickly these habits compound. Diseases once considered “Western problems” are now showing up earlier and more often here too. I’m not saying we need to stop eating fries. I’m definitely not giving up mine. But maybe we need to stop pretending that this trend isn’t shaping our future health. A few small shifts could change the trajectory: • Choose fried as an occasional treat, not a default • Balance indulgence with movement • Encourage healthier food businesses, not just fast-food clones • Teach kids what we were never taught about nutrition • And most importantly — be aware of what’s becoming normal Because it’s not about demonising food. It’s about asking ourselves a simple question: Are we heading towards our own “Fat America” moment… and can we course-correct before it becomes unavoidable? Curious to hear your thoughts. Do you see this shift happening around you too?
