Breaking: No school on May 1 for most Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools students. The CMS Board is designating May 1 as an optional teacher workday. The day will not be made up because CMS still exceeds the legally required number of instructional hours. As of 6 a.m., 1,934 teachers called out for May 1. The typical Friday last year saw 449 absences. This was the last day CMS is able to waive for students before it will need to be made up. But CMS does have one more remote day in their arsenal that they can deploy if needed. The recommendation does not include a change to the CPCC and UNC Charlotte Early and Middle College academic calendars because exams are scheduled on these days.
