Corporate Europe Observatory joins the x-odus. Twitter started as a platform of public debate. Under Musk, however, X has become a space of fascism, hatred and division. This goes strongly against our values as an organisation and we cannot be complicit. #Xit #HelloQuitteX

PFAS, or forever chemicals, are widespread. Check out our new report which shows how EU’s proposed PFAS restriction is at serious risk of being hijacked by corporate lobbying Read it in our website and sign the petition for a #ToxicFreeEurope

The @EU_Commission should now: 1⃣ Increase transparency on AI standard-setting 2⃣ Increase participation of civil society ❌More fundamentally, the EU should not outsource public policy-making on fundamental rights to private bodies!

Microsoft is especially dominant in setting AI standards. 3⃣ national delegations to CEN-CENELEC - Germany, the UK, and Ireland - are regularly headed by Microsoft representatives. Microsoft also co-hosted a plenary session of CEN-CENELEC in 2024.

Standard-setting organisations are private bodies historically dominated by corporate interests 55% of experts working on AI standards in CEN-CENELEC are from companies or consultancies w/ a large share from Big Tech. Only 9% are from civil society 👉 corporateeurope.org/en/2025/01/bia…

🪀Up to now, standards have been used for technical issues such as machine safety or chemicals in toys 🤖 Worryingly, the AI Act is the first time 'harmonised standards' will be used to implement rules on fundamental rights, how to deal with bias in AI systems, and transparency

We are extremely alarmed by the latest information we have received regarding the whereabouts of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyyah, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital. He should now be considered as victim of enforced disappeared, and as such at great risk of torture and ill-treatment. Israel authorities must urgently disclose the location of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyyah. Dr. Abu Safiyyah was reportedly arrested on December 27, 2024, when IDF forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital. Video footage from that day shows the senior doctor walking toward an IDF armored vehicle before being taken for questioning. Following the incident, an IDF spokesperson confirmed his arrest and stated that he had been transferred for interrogation. However, since then, no further information has been provided about his whereabouts. But on Thursday January 1st, the Israeli military informed Physicians for Human Rights that they have no record of Dr. Abu Safiyyah’s detention. This response came after PHRI, acting on behalf of Dr. Abu Safiyyah’s family requested information to facilitate a lawyer’s visit on January 2. In its response to PHRI’s inquiry, the military stated: "Following your inquiry, we would like to inform you that a review has found no indication of the arrest or detention of the individual in question." In light of this denial, PHRI has now filed a petition with the Israeli High Court of Justice (HCJ) on Thursday, demanding immediate disclosure of Dr. Abu Safiyyah’s location. Since October 2023, Israel has detained hundreds of Palestinian healthcare workers from Gaza without charge or trial. Health workers have been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment and been held in incommunicado detention.

🥤💧 Without realising it, we are crossing a new planetary boundary. A small human-made molecule is increasingly polluting our drinking water on a global scale, #TFA. And #PFAS #Pesticides are the main reason. pan-europe.info/blog/tfa-pollu…

Usual story re DG Grow "Grow is rather sensitive to MNCs arguments even if it means repeating their arguments almost word for word. In internal memo it expresses its concerns about nomination of siloxanes ... then lists its reservations which are very similar to industry letters"
