An Essay on Creator Led Brands.
I think over the past 3-4 years there’s been a massive up-tick in these creator led brands, and as many individuals in the audience see the growth, lessons and learnings of someone else, they get inspired to start their own.
I’m all for people having a go at things, but I think this can sometimes be problematic, and here’s why:
- they only see the good stuff
- they don’t actually want to run a business they just want to be a ‘business owner’ or have more money (if anything starting a business does the opposite)
- people overvalue their ‘creator’ desires or skills
so let’s dig into that…
you see the likes of @MarcusMilione - Emma Chamberlain - Emily Oberg, doing Huge Collab, Selling Out Products and hosting huge in person shops or events.
But what you don’t see (or at least pay attention to)… is:
How they funded it, how they sourced product, emails messing up, setting up fulfilment & distribution, understanding taxes & accounting, and all the other ‘boring’ parts of creating a business.
And all of the above either take years of learning, failing, working and trying or having a co-founder of partner who’s already done exactly that.
So… when most people start, they hit this wall when realising they don’t have enough money, or time to figure out how to actually make a high quality, valuable product or how to get distribution, so they give up.
and that’s just the product side…
The other side of the coin is audience and understanding how these 2 sides fit together.
Over the past year, it feels like everyone and their grandma has started a brand where they’re ’documenting the process’.
And don’t get me wrong, it’s a great form of content and way to share your story/journey with people…
but for f*ck sake, that is not how you build a creator led brand.
You don’t buy Jordan’s because Michael Jordan, 23, the GOAT, was in the factory making them himself, you buy them, because he wears & performs in them.
You don’t buy chamberlain coffee because she goes to Columbia and handpicks the beans herself before packaging them up, you buy it because she herself drinks it every morning.
So instead of starting something that is all about you ‘making it’… you need to actually get people to like, follow or watch you for something already, and then make better versions of the stuff you’re already using or talking about.
Minted New York started because @MarcusMilione who made fashion & gym content couldn’t get the short 18mm chains he wanted in a thick enough link as there was only girls necklaces in that size, so he made one… for himself, and wore them, then… people followed suit.
the BEST example of this, for me anyway, is Derek from MorePlatesMoreDates on YouTube, who imo is probably the biggest organic (non-funded or partnered) creator brand.
Probably worth over $100m now.
and what did he do?
Made a blog and YouTube content about stuff he cared about, gym supplements, healthcare and more and he was stacking various different brands of supplements to the formula what he wanted.
So instead, he made his own versions but better.
Now Gorilla Mind is one of the biggest supplement companies in the world. and guess what, he wasn’t ‘documenting the process’, he was just using it.
If you take anything away from this
It’s that in order to truly create something long-term, you need to make something that you yourself want.
1 year ago I designed a phone case that read ‘weapon of mass distraction’ to keep me from picking it up.
1 case, for myself, and loved having it on my phone and showing it off, didn’t sell it or even try to market it.
Yesterday I sold out on almost all models of that phone case on the biggest drop I’ve done yet… overnight.
Make sh*t that you want, then share that with the world. Not the other way round.
