@CeeOhOh what this meant for a long time was when you asked for SteamOS on desktop they’d (rightly) point you to a Linux distribution. It’s not that you can’t use it for these things it’s just not as good of an experience to run everything through Flatpak atm

@CeeOhOh SteamOS uses a several versions behind Linux kernel and KDE Plasma desktop. It isn’t bleeding edge by any means. It’s curated by Valve to be a stable backdrop for gaming. Not a productivity machine

@CeeOhOh whatever you’re thinking is SteamOS couldn’t be further from it. you just use Discover like any sane Linux user. no AUR helper no modifying the filesystem, none of that

@CeeOhOh it’s immutable Arch. basically the only way to install apps is via Flathub on SteamOS. I own a Steam Deck which runs SteamOS so

I feel bad for Valve here tbh. Everyone attacking them over the price when it's largely out of their control and due to the insane prices on memory currently Obviously you can build a better PC yourself cheaper but I view this more as a "PC console" rather than a typical PC

Console fanboys acting the high price of the steam machine is a W for them as if the next generation of shitboxes isn't gonna send them back to low income housing

@revenant_MMXX People had even less reason to buy a Steam Deck when it came out, Proton wasn’t even finished and you had to do a fuck ton of troubleshooting to get some games to work. You’re just a retarded nerd that can’t think outside your station, the goyim are retarded and will buy this.

@revenant_MMXX That’s not even what I was saying though. Both of those platforms have been bleeding to steam for years, it’s the lowest thought required barrier of entry TO STEAM specifically. Hopefully that helps since you can’t read.

The lowest thought required barrier of entry already exists and it's called Xbox and PS5. If you want bad performance and cooling that will fit in a backpack, that's what laptops are for
Zen@zogvampire

@revenant_MMXX Hey retard: PC builders are obviously not the target demographic for the Steam Machine. It’s clearly just to be the lowest thought required barrier of entry for like, your granddad, and Steam has always had a higher barrier of entry price wise. It will be fine.

@g0lden8ge @revenant_MMXX Maybe for you since you’re a broke nigger buying playstation with foodstamps. PCs cost more than consoles and always have, normgroids DO NOT care about what goes in a device so long as it runs. You’re thinking like an enthusiast, most people do not.

If you had the money to spend on a Steam Machine, you could just as easily buy a pre-built PC tower with better specs. Here's a $1049 pre-built with a 14600KF, twice as much RAM + storage, and a bit more VRAM.

The Steam Machine, at $1049, is a bit too expensive to take on the PS5 or the Xbox Series X. But even at that seemingly high price, it’s still one of the cheapest and almost certainly the easiest way to get into PC gaming right now. Our review: bit.ly/4uNi025 #IGNSummerOfGaming

Obviously, the Steam Machine is going to be the clear entrypoint to Steam, especially for those who don’t understand or WANT to understand specing out their parts before purchase. Most people struggle to read basic instructions, let alone figure out what a 7700xt does vs a 5060.

@revenant_MMXX Don’t know any granddads playing PS5 but still. Your dad. Clearly enthusiasts will already build a Windows or Linux PC and be fine anyway. You aren’t the target audience for it.
