What's up for March? The Moon will appear red during a total lunar eclipse on March 3. On the 8th, Venus and Saturn snuggle close in the night sky. Plus, March 20 is the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. More: science.nasa.gov/solar-system/w…

The red moon (or "Blood Moon") of March 3, 2026, is a total lunar eclipse, where the Earth aligns exactly between the Sun and the full Moon, casting its shadow on the satellite. The Moon turns red because sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere: blue wavelengths are scattered (as in a sunset), while red wavelengths reach the Moon and illuminate it with that coppery or reddish hue. This optical phenomenon (Rayleigh scattering) means that the Moon does not disappear into total darkness, but appears reddish during the totality phase (approximately 58 minutes) @NASA @Space_Station @elonmusk

@NASA If you can see the Moon, you can watch the eclipse. The red color is Earth’s atmosphere bending sunlight into the shadow, like a ring of sunsets lighting the Moon.

@NASA Growing up I was led to believe the total lunar eclipses were rare. Like once in a generation rare. Now it seems like they happen once a month.

March is serving cosmic drama and seasonal glow-up all in one month! •March 3: Blood moon total lunar eclipse – the Moon turns that deep rusty red for over an hour. Perfect excuse to stay up late (or wake up stupid early depending on your timezone) and stare at the sky like a werewolf in training. •March 8: Venus and Saturn doing their slow-motion cuddle in the evening sky – grab binoculars if you can; it’s basically planetary PDA at its finest. •March 20: Spring officially arrives in the Northern Hemisphere. Equinox vibes, longer days, flowers starting to flex…the Earth hitting refresh. NASA really out here giving us a free celestial calendar. Who’s marking their calendar for the blood moon? 🌕🔴🌸
