You may have noticed that I’m not posting as much as I used to. Why?
As I used X and grew my account, I found that I just kept getting called back to check my notifications and feed my brain little hits of short-lived glee driven by that ever elusive engagement.
-Watching a football game and it’s taking a second to snap the ball? Check X.
- “Boring” cut scene in a video game? Check X.
- Between sets at the gym? Check X.
- Checked my work email? Check X.
- Lul in the IRL convo? Check X.
The constant dopamine hits of 5, 10, 20+ notifications are addictive. But, they aren’t productive. They don’t help you accomplish things. They don’t enrich your life in any meaningful way. They don’t make the world better or create lasting joy. They are just a constant drip-feed heroinesque hit that make you crave more. They make you want to post a banger, write a long-winded thread, comment too often, and gm every day to hear those notis ding, see a number on that little bell, and watch the engagement climb.
I still believe in the mission. Decentralized finance and systems, to me, are still the best way forward for humanity. Verifiable ownership of digital goods is still a revolution. I still love the art.
But, I don’t like being a modern day drug addict, begging my hypothalamus to give me one more hit, coaxed by the machine to keep coming back and checking the little bell hoping for a quick high. I don’t like the feeling of allowing myself to be controlled by an app that gives fleeting pleasure at the expense of precious time.
I’m not going anywhere. I’m still here. I’m just not here nearly as often and I’m perfectly ok with that.
Be well my friends. I’ll see you around on my terms, not on the terms of that small dose of short-lived and meaningless gratification. I hope you find the time to touch a bit of grass, play a game, go for a run, watch a movie, have a conversation, and enjoy life without the monster in your pocket screaming to the dopamine in your brain, "feed me and you'll feel good for a second or two".
