Joc Pederson is the elephant in this lineup right now. He's in the DH spot, batting 5th, and through 13 PAs he is hitting .000 with a wRC+ of -35. That ranks 350th out of 360 qualified hitters in the majors. His wOBA is .108. His xwOBA is .211, which means even the contact quality isn't saving him. The one silver lining is his average exit velo at 98.8 mph, which leads every single hitter in the big leagues right now. The ball is jumping off his bat when he makes contact. The problem is he's not making contact. He's squaring nothing up, with a 0% barrel rate and 75% hard hit rate that sounds good until you realize it's built on 8 batted balls total. Small sample, absolutely. And his career numbers say he's a guy who runs a .840+ OPS in the second half. We've seen this before with Joc. But here's the issue. Ezequiel Duran is on this roster with a 158 wRC+, a .389 wOBA, and a 12.5% barrel rate. Andrew McCutchen is hitting .375 with a 216 wRC+ that ranks 28th in the league. We have options. If Pederson doesn't start making contact in the next week or two, the conversation about his role in this lineup is going to get loud. Right now that DH spot could be doing a lot more work for us.

It's early in the season. He's had a couple innings under his belt so he's going to be okay.” Martin gave up the game late in the 9th with a 2-run homer to Tyler Stephenson.
