@SFBART @Noahpinion Nobody cares who enforces fare evasion as long as its enforced. Ive only seen fare inspectors once (identified on uniform). The expectation should be seeing fare inspectors regularly on platforms & stairs. Use cameras for surveillance. Faster gates = aggressive push tailgaters.

Police enforce tailgating (station agents do not as they are not police).
To reduce tailgating we are speeding up the doors and reducing the sensor area that triggers the door closure. It is in testing now. We continue to refine the new gates. We are also building higher barriers including adding panels to the emergency gates so they can’t be easily jumped over.

Instead of a dying service that needs constant bailouts because it lets junkies and creeps ride for free, BART should install fare gates everywhere and be a thriving public transit system that working class people can use to get around without a car.

BART added fare gates in August of 2025, and by last month there were 500,000 more rides compared to the year before. Lower crime in public spaces means that public services are better for everyone.

@SFBART @Noahpinion There's fare gates but near zero enforcement on tailgaters, which I see daily. Fare evasion fines can help pay Fare enforcement salaries alone, with extra for quality of life improvements, like cleaning.

We’ve had fare gates since our first day of service. Last year we replaced all fare gates systemwide with taller and stronger gates.
We served 55,610,841 trips in 2025 and 44% of our riders do not own a car.
Public transit requires public funding to operate. Just like public roads and highways which BTW are not nearly as safe as BART.
