NPR dropped the words "national" and "public" from their name long ago now--is no surprise that like other cultural institutions it is receiving support from wealthy donors nytimes.com/2026/04/16/bus…

"Give them Campbell's Vegetable Soup. Into this fine soup go fifteen different vegetables. Serve brimming bowls of it … and there in itself is your main dish for a nourishing wartime meal. In fact, many women call Campbell's Vegetable Soup 'almost a meal in itself.'" (1943)

@MichaelSocolow @The_OAH Some archives did not allow pens, only pencils, notetaking only on yellow paper (I then transferred those notes to index cards); 25-50 cents to copy one page (I chose those carefully!). Do not miss those days.

I'm headed to the Organization of American Historians Conference (@The_OAH )in Philadelphia this week, which prompted some thoughts on just how different being a historian is in 2026 than it was in the 1990s (when I earned my Ph.D.). Latest in the Lint Trap. Link in reply⬇️

This is a lesson that I think a lot of people who graduate with fancy degrees and work in the knowledge industry need to internalize. You have no right to do a fun job. If you get a fun job that pays well, you hit the jackpot. Most people hate their jobs.

I just used my university's subscription version of Google Gemini (which we are encouraged to use) for a very simple task: Go through a dissertation and let me know if all in-text citations appear in the references list. We went around several times. Worse than useless.

The competition (YouTube, Tiktok, etc) is expanding as Hollywood is shrinking--but Hollywoodites demand no shrinkage--hoping to reverse the tide I suppose nytimes.com/2026/04/13/bus…

I’ve been saying this for awhile but I think YouTube, unlike legacy TV, is working hard to reinvent advertising and has the wherewithal to possibly accomplish it

British broadcasters refused to air much popular music so pirate radio broadcasters supplied the rocknroll music audiences demanded--government-controlled media doesn't always serve audience interests

DJs from Radio Caroline in 1966, and the ship Radio Caroline🏴‍☠️ In 1964, Radio Caroline began broadcasting from a ship off the Essex coast. It was probably the best-known free radio in the UK. The British authorities were unable to reach them, as they stuck to off-coast locations.

2/20/45: RCA and NBC invite you to "Hold a 'Television Party' in Your Home Tonight'' in New York Daily News ad. There were as many as 1,500 TV sets in range of WNBT, but a great many were inoperable because parts and service were unavailable to civilians due to World War II.

This was the result of the FCC deciding that cigarette commercials (but no other product) were subject to the Fairness Doctrine because there was a controversy over health effects—broadcasters would be required to air PSAs about harm for every tobacco ad
Programming Insider@PIUpdate

🚭 April 1, 1970: President Richard Nixon signed into law banning cigarette commercials on radio and television. That ban officially went into effect on January 2, 1971. instagr.am/p/DWm8XDMguKm/
