@ydnad0 Irony that the gun factory club is grand and the school is austere and minimal. If there is a colonial mindset to change, it's not our language or identity it's our priorities! And locked libraries are particularly painful 😖

Went back to Cossipore English School today after many years. It was a small school then, still is, located inside the sprawling 7 Tanks Estate in North Kolkata. The school was affordable, near home and had big hearted teachers. No frills, just very real and grounded. The door to the library was locked. Once upon a time the books inside were a window to the world, where the freedom to imagine and wander was discovered.  Before exams we would sit by the side of that canal for last minute revisions. The water and the greenery would calm our nerves. The high grounds of the Cossipore Club were beyond reach;  it served the officers of the Gun and Shell Factory in whose land the school found home. Even today, it felt high and lofty; but the reawakening of those old familiar feelings of being a small, fragile human being felt strangely comforting.  This is where I made my first friends. It was lovely catching up with some of them again, today.

Every time I visited India’s leading research institutes like TIFR, ICTS, or IMSc, I was struck by the energy and talent of their postdoctoral communities. This appears set to change. An upper cap of on postdoc to faculty ratio has been set on these institutes. The cap is a modest 0.6, significantly below what these institutions historically recruited. Postdocs are the real engines of research. If you want to scale up research with the least investment, the most effective way is to hire more postdocs. Conversely, if you want to slow down research while saving peanuts…let’s just say I am concerned about the future of physics research.

Nice to see the equation CD = k1. (λ/ N.A.) on the ASML wall. It is related to the Abbe's criterion for resolution. In the chip manufacturing context, the equation means: critical dimension of fine structure = constant X (Wavelength of light / Numerical aperture of the lens) all connected to fundamental concepts of image formation in optical physics

A small sampling of Raman’s publication. These papers are related to light scattering, and form the foundation on which he made his famous discovery. Raman wrote more than 400 research papers in his lifetime (apart from monographs, lectures and public talks). Writing such a series of papers on a particular topic can be observed throughout his career. A note to young scholars: intellectual monuments are built this way: thought after thought, day after day, paper after paper. Never underestimate what can be achieved with consistent, honest effort.
