A day in a life of a labor lawyer From my son Matthew’s speaking engagement with the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP) at UP-Diliman in the morning… to drafting three position papers for FFW union members from Clark Free Zone in Pampanga and attending two consultation meetings with digital workers from Metro Manila… then ending the day delivering a special message for workers at the 10th anniversary of the Circle of Advocates for Workers (CAW)—founded by my former law students and now lawyers from MLQU Law—Saturday was so productive it practically filed its own accomplishment report

(2) As their former prof in Labor Law, I could not help but feel proud. A teacher’s joy, after all, is not only in seeing students pass the bar, but in seeing them pass the test of purpose—using the law not merely as a profession, but as a vocation in the service of workers and the poor. From the classrooms of Quiapo to the frontlines of labor advocacy, they have shown that the lessons of labor law are best remembered when they are lived. And for that, I am proud to have been their teacher.

Today, I had the honor of being invited to speak at the 10th anniversary of the Circle of Advocates for Workers (CAW). To my pleasant surprise, three of my former students from MLQU School of Law in Quiapo turned out to be among the founders of this worthy circle: Leandro Opetina, its General Secretary, together with Erwin Sepacio and Joel Odio.

I think Magsaysay is different. Other than good governance and integrity in office, Magsaysay made the Palace feel like it belonged to the people.

As my students are studying law, they already have plenty of chances to practice it in their own fields of expertise—and, in time, in court when they become lawyers.
