Developed by the Center for Governance, the CFG Community is designed to extend engagement beyond the classroom into a connected, practice-driven governance environment. The platform will also provide ongoing insights and resources to support stronger board effectiveness and decision-making. Registration is now open for eligible professionals.

Age diversity is emerging as one of the most important, yet overlooked, frontiers in corporate governance. Our new CFG white paper, Age Diversity on Boards: The Governance of Intergenerational Collaboration, examines how generational balance can strengthen board oversight, innovation, and long-term decision-making. Saudi Arabia provides a fascinating case study. The average age of directors on boards of Saudi-listed companies is just over 50, compared with 60 in Switzerland and France, 63 in the United States, and 64 in Japan. Many Saudi boards already span 20 to 25 years between their youngest and oldest members, a range research suggests may represent a “sweet spot” for effective governance. When boards combine the experience and judgment of seasoned directors with the digital fluency and fresh perspective of younger members, they are better equipped to anticipate disruption, identify emerging risks, and respond to changing stakeholder expectations. But age diversity does not manage itself. Chairs and nomination committees must actively shape board dynamics to ensure that different generational perspectives are genuinely heard. The paper proposes that Saudi Arabia could lead globally by introducing clearer disclosure of board age profiles and developing a NextGen Board Readiness Program to strengthen the future pipeline of younger directors.
