Lots of talk about unsuccessful partner finding and being single late into adulthood and all I can think about is how unprepared we all are for retirement and the later years when body and mind start to decay. Singlehood in 50’s and 60’s looks similar to singlehood in late 30’s and 40’s, but takes on a darker quality from your 70’s. Even in the best of scenarios where you have family and money, life can be incredibly lonely.
I’ve been exposed to plenty of people 70+ from many life circumstances ((un)married/divorced with/without kids, healthy/unhealthy, well funded/scraping by) and what struck me is how much work and independence it takes within the few very healthy examples, to keep healthy connections, to keep mind and body sound.
If you believe there’s even a slight chance that you will not be that phenomenal 70/80+ year old continuing to take great care of your mind, body, and soul, without help from a partner or child (whether you are lucky to have them or not), then you should (1) work to generate strong ties to friends/community today, and (2) learn how to take care of your health. It will never be easier than it is today. If you are 20, 25, 30, 35, 47 and lacking, you will not magically transform into the 81 year old with a small set of friends who you can talk to a couple times per week, who takes long walks daily.
