In Nigeria, when someone suddenly smells something rotten that isn’t there, stares blankly, loses awareness, or has fits at midnight/early morning… many families first think “witchcraft”, “demonic possession”, “curse”, or “juju”. STOP. That’s a dangerous myth. This is epilepsy — a real medical brain condition, NOT spiritual attack.
The bad smell? It’s an “olfactory aura” from abnormal electrical bursts in the temporal lobe. Staring/loss of awareness happens when it spreads. Common causes in Naija: old brain scar from head trauma (accidents/falls), childhood infections/meningitis, birth complications, or prolonged fever seizures. All medical — NONE spiritual. Nighttime episodes? Poor sleep, stress, or illness lower the seizure threshold. Clusters (multiple seizures) can feel endless but are manageable now. Here’s the HOPE:
Epilepsy is highly treatable.
Up to 70% of people get excellent control or near-seizure-free life with proper anti-seizure medicines.
For tougher cases (like focal temporal lobe with scar), MRI/EEG guide treatment — rescue meds stop clusters fast, and surgery often brings long-term freedom (60–80% become seizure-free in suitable cases). People with epilepsy are NOT cursed, possessed, contagious, or dangerous. With care, they finish school, work, marry, raise families — full normal lives. The real enemy is stigma and delay. Stop hiding. Stop spiritual-only searches. Go to a neurologist — get MRI, EEG, meds, action plan. Faith/prayer gives strength — many combine both with medical help and see real change. Doctors are part of healing, not against God. If this sounds like someone you know: urge them to seek help TODAY. Better days are possible. Share this. Tag a friend/family. Light a purple candle.
You are NOT alone. Epilepsy is brain health — NOT witchcraft. #EpilepsyNaija #EndTheStigmaNaija #EpilepsyAwareness #PurpleDay
