Azolla based cultivation system-how can India reduce Urea imports n enhance energy security. Fertiliser security is increasingly a question of energy security, fiscal prudence and national resilience. India has made commendable progress in expanding domestic urea capacity. Yet structural exposure remains: the country still imports ~7–9 MT of urea annually, and over a quarter of those imports come from China, even as most domestic production depends on imported LNG for ammonia synthesis via the Haber–Bosch process. A meaningful share of the nitrogen sustaining Indian agriculture therefore remains linked to global energy and fertiliser supply chains. In a geopolitically uncertain world, such dependencies—whether on energy markets or strategic competitors—deserve careful attention. This exposure also carries fiscal implications: fertiliser subsidies have at times approached ₹2 lakh crore annually, reflecting the scale of India’s commitment to supporting farmers. For over a century the world has relied on fossil fuels to fix atmospheric nitrogen. Nature, however, has long done the same using sunlight and biology. Encouragingly, young Indian entrepreneurs are exploring this pathway. One such indigenous innovation is an Azolla-based cultivation system developed by Neervana Netzero Pvt. Ltd. (WO2024241342), enabling decentralised biological nitrogen fixation that could act as a domestic buffer to fertiliser supply volatility while potentially representing one of the world’s lowest-cost scalable carbon capture pathways. The technology is Indian in origin, with patent filings across India, the US, China, European Union, Australia and Saudi Arabia, and a granted patent in South Africa. Beyond fertiliser resilience, Azolla biomass may also serve as a feedstock for domestic biofuel production via transesterification, contributing to long-term energy security. Innovations like these reflect the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
