Water is the source of life, connecting people, ecosystems, and the planet itself. However, the world is facing a growing water crisis, from floods and droughts to pollution and melting glaciers. Thanks to bold leadership and sustained global cooperation, Tajikistan has been at the forefront of the international water agenda for more than two decades, initiating key UN resolutions and international actions, including the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018-2028). The 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018-2028) will be held on May 25-28, 2026, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The conference will be an important platform for governments, international organizations, scientists, youth, and civil society to accelerate action towards achieving SDG 6 — “Clean Water and Sanitation for All” and other internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The main goal of the Conference is to strengthen cooperation and create a favorable basis for taking concrete action to address global water issues and support the implementation of water-related Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development.” At the same time, this conference is a key event in the preparation for the UN Water Conference in 2026 and informal consultations and discussions with stakeholders on the UN Water Conference in 2028, which will be held in Tajikistan. Join the global community in Dushanbe to shape the future of water on the international agenda until 2030 and beyond. After all, ensuring sustainable water resources means ensuring life itself. 🌍 Event: 4th Dushanbe Water Action Decade Conference 📅 Dates: 25–28 May 2026 📍 Location: Dushanbe, Tajikistan

Mountain #Ecosystems & #River Headwaters Mountain regions play a crucial role in shaping #riverflows and providing #freshwater to millions of people living downstream. Accelerated #glaciermelt and changes in snow cover are increasing risks to water availability and to the security of ecosystems that depend on mountain water sources. The #4thDushanbeConference in #Dushanbe will continue the discussions launched at the International Conference on #GlacierPreservation2025. Particular attention will be given to the protection of #mountain #ecosystems, #glacier preservation, and the development of joint climate adaptation measures in mountain river basins.

❄️🌍 21 March — World Day for Glaciers Glaciers are melting faster than ever. And this is not just about ice — it is about water, climate, and our shared future. On 21 March, the global community marks World Day for Glaciers, highlighting the urgent need to address rapid glacier retreat and its far-reaching consequences for water resources, ecosystems, and sustainable development. 💧 Why glaciers matter Glaciers are strategic natural freshwater reservoirs. They provide water for: • Drinking supplies • Agriculture • Energy production For millions of people — especially in mountain and arid regions — glaciers are a lifeline. ⚠️ The challenge Accelerated glacier loss, driven by climate change, poses serious risks to water security and long-term resilience. Changes in glacier mass affect river flows, food systems, hydropower generation, and fragile ecosystems. 🌐 From awareness to action Within the framework of the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018–2028), glacier preservation, sustainable water management, and climate adaptation remain central priorities. 📍 The Conference in Dushanbe serves as an important international platform to advance coordinated solutions and strengthen global partnerships in the water sector. #WorldDayForGlaciers #WaterForSustainableDevelopment #ClimateAction #WaterSecurity

Hydropower and Sustainable Development Hydropower is a key source of renewable energy and plays a significant role in ensuring the energy security of many countries. At the same time, the development of hydropower requires careful consideration of ecosystem impacts, the interests of local communities, and the effective management of reservoirs. In Dushanbe, participants will discuss the role of sustainable hydropower in achieving climate targets and the Sustainable Development Goals. Approaches that enable the integration of renewable energy development with ecosystem conservation, as well as the equitable distribution of benefits among countries and regions, will be examined.

Cities and Sustainable Water Infrastructure Cities are facing increasing pressure on water resources due to urbanization, climate change, and population growth. Developing sustainable urban water infrastructure — including the modernization of networks, reduction of water losses, and implementation of water reuse systems — has become a priority for municipalities. As part of the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development,” 2018–2028, an International Exhibition will also showcase solutions and exhibits in the field of sustainable water infrastructure. The main goal of the exhibition is to raise global awareness of the measures being undertaken and the progress achieved in implementing the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” by demonstrating cutting-edge knowledge, best practices, and scientific achievements in the water sector. The exhibition will also present examples of sustainable water management in cities from different regions of the world. Discussions on integrated “city–water–climate” approaches will strengthen the exchange of experience and support cities on their path toward sustainable and climate-resilient water policies. The exhibition aims to foster and develop collaboration among stakeholders, promote innovative methods, techniques, and technologies for sustainable water management, and facilitate close business and professional connections among participants. International and regional organizations, national authorities, local governments, non-governmental organizations, private companies, academic and research institutions, and other interested entities are invited to participate. #DushanbeWaterProcess #4thDushanbeConference #UrbanWater #ResilientCities #WaterInfrastructure

Digital Technologies and #SmartWater: A New Stage in #WaterResourcesManagement The rapid advancement of digital technologies — from remote sensing systems and satellite observation to big data analytics and artificial intelligence — is shaping a fundamentally new model of water resources management. The integration of real-time sensors, digital platforms, and predictive analytics enables governments and water authorities to shift from reactive responses to proactive, science-based decision-making. “Smart” solutions provide more accurate assessments of surface and groundwater reserves, early warning of droughts and floods, reduced losses in water supply systems, improved energy efficiency, and greater transparency in resource allocation. Digitalization also strengthens trust among countries sharing transboundary basins through data exchange and joint monitoring. As part of the #4thDushanbeConference on the International #DecadeforAction “Water for Sustainable Development,” 2018–2028, to be held from 25 to 28 May 2026 in #Dushanbe, special emphasis will be placed on the digital transformation of the water sector as a strategic instrument for achieving water and climate resilience. Discussions on best practices, innovative platforms, and international partnerships are expected to promote the scaling up of smart solutions, mobilize investment, and foster an enabling regulatory environment. Digital technologies are becoming not merely supportive tools, but key drivers of more effective water governance, sustainable development, and the protection of communities from escalating climate risks.

#GEO7: A #GlobalChoice for a #SustainableFuture for #People & the #Planet The #UnitedNations Environment Programme (#UNEP) presented its report #GlobalEnvironmentOutlook – Seventh Edition: The Future We Choose (#GEO7) at the session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi. The report notes that ongoing environmental degradation results in millions of deaths each year and causes economic losses amounting to trillions of dollars. GEO-7 demonstrates that transitioning to a stable climate, healthy ecosystems, and reduced pollution could generate trillions of dollars in additional global GDP annually, prevent premature deaths, and reduce hunger and poverty. The report places special emphasis on the critical role of freshwater. Increasing pressure on water resources threatens sustainable development and may exacerbate water, food, and social crises, particularly in vulnerable regions. The authors call for systemic transformations in the economy, energy, food systems, waste management, and environmental governance. Coordinated action by governments, businesses, and society could generate up to USD 20 trillion in annual global benefits by 2070. The report’s findings are highly relevant to the global water agenda and preparations for the 2026 Water Conference. The full report is available on the UNEP website:unep.org/resources/glob….
