Deep dive into Union's zk proofing system ZK proofs are a way to prove something is true without showing all the details To illustrate, imagine you have a password to a room, a zk proof would let you prove you know the password without actually saying the password out loud So in a sense you are just proving you know it not revealing it Many projects adopts zk proofing today because zk proofs are used to prove a transaction is valid without revealing all the information about it thereby keeping things private and secure @union_build uses a custom zk proofing system called Galois It was built from the GNARK which is one of the fastest zk libraries and it’s a big deal for how union makes cross-chain apps fast, secure and truly decentralized Galois helps prove that a transaction on Union really happened and lets other chains trust that event without relying on relayers or long wait times What makes Galois different is how efficient it is It generate proofs for 128 validators in just 7 seconds You can run it on a regular laptop with only 5GB of RAM and no high GPU requirements With these little pc requirements it means more people can help power the system making it harder to censor or control In order to ensure Galois was secure from day one, a trusted ceremony was held Union invited the community to participate in this ceremony so that no single person or group controls the keys to Galois. For zk systems like this to work securely the initial parameters called toxic waste must be generated and destroyed properly As long as one participant was honest and destroyed their data, the entire system remains secure If anyone secretly kept them, they could potentially create fake proofs and break the system’s trust model By holding the trusted setup in public which over 5000 people contributed, union proved it was serious about openness and transparency thus letting everyone contribute to the system not just using it. zkgm 🦈
