Dawkins’s Law of the Conservation of Difficulty. Pretentious obscurantism in an academic discipline expands to fill the vacuum of its intrinsic simplicity. #PhysicsEnvy #PostmodernMetabollocks

If you'd like to watch it, it's here. Sharing it with your friends/followers would be massively appreciated - who knows, it might even start to move the needle in a positive way.

@FarrellLeeds @tobypeterdavies Changes to police crime recording since ~2013-14, which have inflated crime counts (especially violence) may also be significant in terms of narrative and perceptions. The divergence with the CSEW has allowed cherry picking. twitter.com/gmhales/status…

Same chart as above, but indexed to 2013/14 (the police recorded crime inflection point) instead of 2002/3

Hugely gratified to receive this award for my book with @iainchanning @yeomans_henry on Historical Criminology. Deepest thanks to @HCriminology Grateful to many others for support with the book, but especially @TimNewburn @CrimPublishing for their encouragement.
Historical Criminology@HCriminology
In a fitting piece of news, the DHC applauds the work of @dchurchill01 @yeomans_henry and @lianchanning with their work, Historical Criminology. The title has earned our inaugural book award for defining the genre. Never too late to order a copy. amazon.com/Historical-Cri…

#QuantCrimMCR30 . An honour to be part of this celebration. Have uploaded short talk about time in Manchester and beyond to researchgate.net/publication/37…
English

Today I’m at #QuantCrimMCR30, where @FarrellLeeds emphasises how shockingly high crimes such as robbery and burglary were in the 1990s. “My car was broken into more times than I can remember … we were once ushered out of the Hacienda after gunfire on the dance floor.”

@Wiggett_IE @LessCrime @rickmuir1 Thanks. You’re not wrong and it’s a work in progress. We’ve done other work explaining how a domino effect brought down violence including researchgate.net/publication/33…
English

@LessCrime @rickmuir1 @FarrellLeeds It’s a good paper, but rather dated now. Improvements in security fit some crime types, but not all (eg violence).

Has crime gone up or down in the past 20 years?
Fortunately, England and Wales has some of the best-quality data on crime trends anywhere in the world, thanks to the Crime Survey for England and Wales.
So who's right, @rickmuir1 or @NickFerrariLBC?

'Crime is lower now than it was 20 years ago.' 'Oh, give me a break!' @NickFerrariLBC debates with Policing Foundation's @rickmuir1 over 'police inaction' in the UK.

@yeomans_henry @HCriminology @iainchanning @dchurchill01 @CrimPublishing Fantastic! Congratulations Henry!

@TimNewburn Very sorry to hear this Tim. With all best wishes.

As anyone following me may have figured I'm now in treatment for a serious health problem. This has meant standing back from work at LSE. My colleagues are kindly organising a celebration for me on March 2nd: lse.ac.uk/social-policy/…. Do share. Do keep in touch (email is good)
