Because the same people who insist that a husband has no authority over his wife are often the very same people who expect him to answer for her conduct when she does something morally reprehensible or criminally liable. Weak men who marry women they cannot *CONTROL* will suffer the brutality of the modern marital contract: all of the liability, none of the authority.
