Among the many passersby strolling the shops this weekend, you can almost tell those who are yet to really begin their expeditions, such as that one circle of buddies who walk and laugh together. Swords with sheen, leather without tear, kits fully packed, they seem ready to begin a life on the edge. While that dread lingers, they make the best of their downtime, two of them making a stop at my portrait studio. As he sits proudly across the room in his best gear and armour, something more was also just beginning. It was not the growing inside joke between two pals, but the sparkle in the eyes of a lady in admiration. That day, her affectionate stare foresaw the hero. To her, a boy turned into a man.

Pleasant and courtly, smartly dressed but loose enough for wayfaring, Mr. Theimer approached with hope, and luckily, I had a spot for one more. I’m delighted by his eagerness, but I hope my insight fails me now. Framed in bright orange hair and woven scarlet scarf is a deathly grey face, void of blood and warmth. Took me a while to shake it off; I wasn’t in the Mere anymore. He seemed alright, but part of me wanted to ask if he really was.
