Nice feature for our recently published paper: Gold, D. F., Gupta, R. S., & Reed, P. M. (2024). Exploring the Spatially Compounding Multi-Sectoral Drought Vulnerabilities in Colorado's West Slope River Basins. Earth's Future, 12(11), e2024EF004841.

At a tipping point due to #drought? Water from Colorado’s West Slope river basins plays a vital role in supporting the economy and natural environment across seven western U.S. states. @theAGU @EarthsFutureEiC @CornellEng @CEECornell news.cornell.edu/stories/2024/1…

What's going on out west is absolutely bonkers 10 record highs in a row...and every one of these next 6 days in the forecast is another record high. More than 2 straight weeks with record highs every day

Another record bites the dust! This is now the 10th day in a row with a record high temperature in Phoenix. The high of 109 degrees breaks previous record of 105 degrees set in 1988 and 2020. Our normal high temperature for today's date is 94 degrees. #azwx

The final data has confirmed that #Helene's moisture plume was the most intense on record for parts of six states: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The integrated vapor transport (IVT) associated with Helene was up to around 1.5 times higher than any previous system in this region since at least 1940. IVT measures atmospheric moisture transport, such as with hurricanes and atmospheric rivers. The map below highlights the record-breaking swath and quantifies how much more intense Helene's plume was than the previous record.

1-in-1000 year floods are usually confined to a small area, maybe the size of a city. The size of the 1-500 & 1-1000+ year flood (recurrence interval) is colassal with #Helene #HeleneFlooding . I can say with great certainty that I have never seen a scope like this in the US!
National Water Center@nwsnwc

Estimated rainfall amounts from #Helene across the southern Appalachians had an Annual Recurrence Interval greater than 1000-years over a wide area; meaning there is less than a 0.1% chance (annual exceedance probability) of that happening in any given year.
