He spent his days swimming in the Red Sea, practicing traditional accordion music, watching television, and keeping up with international sports. While the international community and human rights organizations continually demanded his extradition to face trial for the estimated 300,000 deaths during his regime, Saudi authorities maintained his protection. Amin remained in Jeddah until his health deteriorated significantly, leading to his death from multiple organ failure in August 2003 at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital. He was buried in a simple, unmarked grave in Jeddah, far from the country he had ruled with absolute authority.
