The lovely Daniela Houghton is the perfect tour guide for our newly constructed villa located in a quiet privada, blocks from La Parroquia en el centro del magnífico San Miguel de Allende. Designed by the incomparable Ioana Holt, this project was *nearly* a fully group-up construction for HOLT. Our Guests will experience the artistry of Mexico with our handmade tiles stretching from wall to wall and rooms reflecting the retro-modern vibe with our custom-designed beds and seating. We brought the colors of San Miguel inside for all our Guests to soak in. As with all our properties, this three-level property was built and designed by @HoltHello exclusively for short-term guests.

Some of the finest craftsmanship in the world takes place just south of Oaxaca de Juarez, where families that have passed down skills generations spend months on each piece, designing, carving and painting some of the most amazing sculptures. What are Alebrijes? Thanks to movies like Disney's Coco, people around the world now recognize this Mexican folk art and are eager to discover their own spirit animal. Overall, alebrijes celebrate and honor the magic of creativity and the beauty of a more ethereal and spiritual world. Each piece takes months to complete.

The house that started it all for us in San Miguel de Allende: HOLT’s Casa Parque Juárez. Before we even had a good feel for the town, our broker sent us this property, which was available for rent. The photos were old, and the design felt staid. The rent price was very high. He said, “This is it. You need this house.” He was right. Turns out, this is one of the most prestigious homes in the entire region of Mexico! A Spanish colonial marvel built over 200 years ago, like the city itself, amazingly preserved even as the site of the beginning of the Mexican Independence. We painted, we modernized a bit, we added a bedroom, but mostly we let the house do the talking. Bad marketing photos but good bones is usually good receipt for finding a gem. Lovely climate in Oaxaca now that the heat of the summer has been washed away. The temperature has moderated. Many Americans don’t realize that Mexico’s hottest months are May - June, while July and August are cooler than in the US.

We love plants. We love how they make our spaces feel. We love how much Guests comment on them. They are SUPER hard and expensive to maintain! In a bright location like Mexico, getting sun to the plants is the easy part. The hard parts are fighting off petulance, bugs and the watering schedule, especially when you’re in a drought like we are now. You need to train cleaning and maintenance staff to watch out for diseases and bugs that could spread. Often, our Guest Experience team will have to coordinate gardeners around Guests. And of course, sometimes plants don’t make it and need replacing. It’s all a part of the cycle of keeping a home and hotel presentable and welcoming for Guests. 
Next time you stay in a vacation rental or hotel that’s lush with plants, you’ll have an appreciation for how much effort the entire team top-to-bottom does to maintain all those living things.

We have fun with radiator covers. This is in a 1920s-themed apartment we designed a few years ago. The constant flow of Guests using our spaces means things get run down quickly. We like to add touches that last in places that guests don’t physically interact with as much, because that investment will last longer over time.
