For her near 10 minute role in Manchester by the Sea (2016), Michelle Williams became a self described “sleuth” and “stalker,” actively spying on locals, stopping women on the street to ask where they bought their earrings or got their hair done. By interrogating local women about their hair and jewelry, she refused to look like a Hollywood actress playing "working class." The specific hoop earrings, highlight patterns, and winter coats she wore in the film were direct replicas of what she saw in those Massachusetts malls. In her famous, devastating street confrontation with Casey Affleck, her posture, the way she pushes the baby stroller, and her frantic breathing were all modeled after the everyday behaviors she observed during her scouting trips. Her time spent drinking coffee in strangers' houses helped her move past a generic "Boston accent" to capture the highly localized, softer North Shore cadence.
