I was talking to the OG @DJSharad the other day about how the idea of a “summer record” is dead. I don’t actually think the summer record itself is dead but the concept of one song capturing the entire vibe of everyone’s summer, the way that "One Dance" had Summer 2016 in a chokehold, is.
Music and audience are just too segmented now for that.
But I still love the idea of a song of the summer, even if it just encapsulates the vibe of a certain area or niche. Something that ties all the memories of that summer together, so years later, you hear it and you get to look back with a soundtrack to your nostalgia.
So “She Bad” is the summer tribute from Sliime(my Sylheti brother), @KunalMerchant , and Jagm33t and it’s also my pick for THE Summer Record.
I got to hear a snippet of this record a little over a month ago and at the time I thought, "this is THE ONE". But then I had to slow myself down...
Was it just the insane studio speakers?
Was I really about to judge a song in 10 seconds?
Was it the hookah nicotine high?
But now, as the record’s being promoted and I’ve gotten to hear it outside, I want my opinion out early: this is indeed THE ONE.
It fuses the effortless cool that Sliime’s been absolutely running with, his Bengali flips and samples have made him my favorite artist out of the UK this past year with the work of Kunal Merchant, who you already know I hold in the highest regard. The energy of Sliime’s incredible viral run combined with Indo and Kunal fresh off the Coachella stage comes together here for a HIT.
This is the record. A hook that’s about to tear through social media, a vibe that perfectly captures a New York rooftop I’ll be drunk on this summer. This will absolutely be my song of the summer. I can’t wait to hear it on countless rooftops, in countless rooms, all season long and hopefully for many summers to come.
Salute and run this record up for the family.
