Babies are communicating as soon as they are born, and these abilities are developing in the nine months before birth. My detailed account of how this happens... aeon.co/essays/how-fet…

I'm still mildly annoyed that it was desk-rejected by at least 4 journals (and, of course, with no meaningful explanation) but happy that it got constructive, thoughtful and rapid reviews at sciencedirect.com/journal/neuros…

We also discuss mistakes folks often make (and I have certainly made) when it comes to thinking about how development and evolution work together.

📢New research from our lab is out in @PLOSCompBiol and our reimagined marmosets are featured on the cover: doi.org/10.1371/journa…🌞🐒

Today marks the conclusion of a very happy collaboration with @NikhilPhaniraj as we are featured on the cover of Plos Comp Biology for our paper on using mathematical modelling to better understand the temporal coordination of vigilance behaviour in marmosets! A short🧵⤵️

@parmita Love this. Nice to see it all laid out. I feel like neuroscientists have always had a hunch that this is the case (e.g., recovery from brain lesions). But it's easier just choose to ignore it. How can they find THE circuit solution for behavior X if there are many?

Neuroscience has long been fascinated by the brain's complexity. one of its most intriguing aspects, degeneracy, remains a relatively obscure concept. Recently, Dr. Christophe Bernard explored degeneracy as a fundamental principle in neuroscience. Let's explain this conundrum.

Translational illusions: Current Biology cell.com/current-biolog… Read this awhile back. I think it's an awesome book. This is my attempt at a distillation.

@OdedRechavi Just coming off my year-long sabbatical. This is pretty damn close to capturing it. Replace skateboard with electric guitar. And dark blue for red.

@renatrigiorese I've lost two dogs in my life. Vowing after each death, not to get another way because it's too painful. But yet again, I find myself with another. I cannot resist the unique and amazing companionship they provide.

@VenkRamaswamy I came across two studies that were poorly designed. There was no way to fix them. Authors are not inclined to shelve studies that are not any good (often they just keep sending to different journals). I don't want to be the target of their ire.

My 3-year experiment in signing all my manuscript reviews is over. I finally came across some studies where revealing my identity hampered expressing my critique. That is, I doubted that the authors would take well what I had to say.
