Check out our new work with Tom Vogel, @AghnaMukherjee, Edouard Tarter, and Paolo Ermanni: doi.org/10.1016/j.matd… We show how to design bistable structures with improved stiffness using kinematics-based design. The approach is applied to the design of a reconfigurable boom!

@chenna1985 Multi-stability opens the potential for human-in-the-loop operation as the structure returns to the shapes required for antenna operation. We discuss the limitations of this strategy in the paper and propose a powered alternative using smart material actuators.
