@CNSpaceflight

It’s lunar flyby day on NASA’s Artemis II Mission around the Moon 🌚 History is happening above us today! As the astronauts on Orion reach their closest approach to the Moon, we’re celebrating this milestone here on Earth. What you see on the Exosphere was created in collaboration with @NASA, who provided us with a 3D model of the spacecraft and unique soundbites from the April 1st launch to help us design the moon, spacecraft, and flight path to match the real-life version.

A new milestone for humankind: The crew of Artemis II are now the farthest any human has ever travelled, reaching a maximum distance of 252,752 miles from Earth. This surpasses the previous record set by Apollo 13 in 1970 by about 4,102 miles.

Approaching the near side of the Moon. The Artemis II astronauts have surpassed the record for the distance from Earth at 1:56 ET (1756 UTC). This record was previously set during the Apollo 13 mission when the astronauts traveled 248,655 miles from Earth. The Moon continues to grow larger and larger in the windows of the Orion spacecraft as the Artemis II mission gears up to observe the far side. The astronauts are predicted to make their closest approach of the Moon around 7:02pm ET (2302 UTC).

Make new friends, but keep the old. A new photo captures the Moon's near side on the right (the side we see from Earth, identifiable by its dark splotches) and its far side on the left. The Artemis II crew are the first to see the far side with human eyes.

🇪🇸 #SeguridadCiudadana #RealidadSinFiltros #DatosNoRelatos

In Barabbas (1961), the crucifixion scene captured a real solar eclipse, as director Richard Fleischer delayed production to film it on February 15, 1961, using its eerie darkness to enhance the moment. No CGI. No tricks.

Why is the flight to the Moon so slow? I've seen the question many times: "Why is the Artemis 2 flight tracker showing such a low speed, or why is it dropping at all?" In short, it's all about gravity. Even though the spacecraft initially accelerated enough to leave Earth's immediate vicinity, our planet's gravity continues to exert its influence on the way to the Moon. How does it hold the Moon? As Orion flies, Earth continues to pull it back and slow it down. That's why the speed drops. Orion was initially accelerated enough to fly slightly beyond the Moon's orbit, after which the spacecraft turns under Earth's gravity and, with the additional assistance of the Moon's gravity, rushes back toward Earth—again, under the influence of the Moon's gravity. The Artemis 2 flight trajectory is not coincidentally called a free-return trajectory. This means it can return without additional thruster activation, using gravity assist (although in practice, corrective maneuvers are used). On the way back, Orion's speed, on the contrary, will increase.

🌍 | Another photo of Earth released by NASA. And once again: no traces of airplanes, ships, or even satellites. Even though around 10,000-11,000 active satellitesare orbiting our planet, and more than 30,000 orbital objects are being tracked. And still, in these images- nothing.
