Do you have experience conducting #qualitativeresearch? Do you wish we knew more about researchers' experiences in the field, especially those that are awkward, uncomfortable, and dangerous? Do you wish we knew more about how these affect our research and careers? Please consider taking and distributing this survey to help us collect systematic data on this topic. @ASAnews @APSAtweets @AcadSocSciences @AmericanAnthro @isa_sociology @LASAweb @MeTooFieldwork One version is for people currently in academia or those who have retired from an academic position. You can access that survey here: ufl.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eh… Another version of the survey is for individuals who left academia or are retired but transitioned into a non-academic profession before retiring. You can access that survey here: ufl.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_54…

"Sex with underage girls" is rape. Because children can't consent to sex. "Underage sex" = adult raping a child. It's not a difficult concept to grasp, so why do these headlines persist? timesofmalta.com/article/man-wh…

When organizations or Universities preface an outcome by saying “This decision was not easy” it 100% of the time means they chose money over principle.

Oh look.. a HYPOTHETICAL open source step by step plan (where average citizens could air drop food to starving people in #Gaza in the event that we lose contact with the few aid organizations on the ground) is just lying around in our google drive. 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷‍♂️🤷🏽‍♀️ docs.google.com/document/d/11w…

Some of the recruiting letters my husband’s parents withheld from him until he was 24 because “we didn’t want to have travel far to home meets, and you aren’t that smart anyway.” I was there when they handed him these opened letters. He was national champion in high school. He could’ve gone anywhere. Who does that to their kid? He passed advanced physics later on btw. He is incredibly intelligent. I am constantly reforgiving them.

My university has informed us that we are moving to a “customer service” model. Not a joke.

I heard a number of stories like this while on the faculty job market, often told in good humor. But it's not really funny, is it? You shouldn't have to feel like you have to drink or go back to someone's house/hotel to land the job or network. I am so tired of this culture
Dr. Hillary Steinberg@actualdrhillary

Sometimes I think about how in grad school a professor (who I liked and handled this with grace) did a professionalization session on conferences and was like "just be congenial! One time I met an academic I admired and we went back to his hotel room for beers. Networking!" (1/2)

Emergency need: We need $1,355 in funds to secure emergency housing for a very vulnerable member with 2 young children. Will update with each donation. In these ICEy times, all we have is each other. Be well, fam. We care about you and you have a home here with us. #NoBorders

Can we just take a minute to reflect on how ridiculous the academic job market is?

I hope folks grasp that universities & research orgs offload crisis to free external coalitions who themselves are unfunded survivors- then celebrate how they have pathways set up. You can’t pat yourself on the back for help you didn’t provide, nor did you support financially.

This is the paradox: those most aware of how exploitative academic labor is are often the ones doing it unpaid. We need to stop normalizing this. Gratitude and potential opportunity doesn’t pay the bills—and neither does prestige. Poor students can’t afford unpaid internships.
Society for Cultural Anthropology@culanth

@MeTooFieldwork The entire academic service structure is built on that exploitative grammar - editorships, publishing, etc. - that's not an excuse, but it is a reality. I'm sorry that we can't/don't pay people for their labor - including myself!
