We're hosting a barbecue on campus this week at the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre. Come out, have a bison bannock burger and drink, and remember why we are marking this week.

@NWAC_CA The Medicine Wheel symbol (not to be confused with the monuments the spiritual sites) was invented by a white guy in the 1970s and expanded upon by plastic medicine men before becoming widely adopted. The teachings are old, but the symbol is new, and teachings have been added.

#DYK that for centuries Indigenous people have used the medicine wheel for traditional teachings? The four directions, the four seasons, and the four elements are always used in a clockwise direction, following the way the sun moves, rises and sets.

“To me, it’s like turning a page in a book. I’ve been there and done that. You can have all the memories you want, but we done what we could with what we had. I’m glad I’ve done that part of it,” John said. thestarphoenix.com/news/local-new…

Let us celebrate Emancipation Day, and let's remember the part that African and Indigenous slaves played in the founding of our Métis Nation.

There were likely other Black traders, employees, and residents in our Homeland who contributed to the ethnogenesis of our Métis Nation, but their names are forgotten to time. Today, there are Black Métis children who are citizens of our nation.

Today is Emancipation Day. On this day in 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 became law across the British Empire. The anniversary of the enforcement of this law has been celebrated in many countries since the 1800s, and it was formally recognized in Canada in 2021.
