Where is the tomb of Nefertiti? That’s one of the hottest debates in Egyptology, but some archaeologists think her grave was discovered long ago, in the 1880s, in a tomb called Amarna 26. archaeology.org/issues/july-au…

📜 On this day in 1900: Archaeologists in Knossos, Crete discover the first clay tablet with hieroglyphic writing in a script later called Linear B. Linear B script was the writing system of the Mycenaean civilization of the Bronze Age Mediterranean. The syllabic script was used to write Mycenaean Greek from c. 1500 to c. 1200 BCE. It was deciphered by Michael Ventris in 1952, and so the script has provided invaluable insights into the Mycenaean culture and its interaction with contemporary Mediterranean civilizations. 📝 Article by Mark Cartwright. 📷 Photos by Sharon Mollerus and vintagedept.  #OnThisDay #TodayInHistory #LinearB #Writing #AncientScript #Archaeology #Knossos #Crete #AncientGreece #Mycenaean #BronzeAge #History #AncientHistory

Egyptian creation myths told of a primordial mound emerging from the Waters of Chaos. One of Egypt’s most sacred temples, Karnak, was founded on what was once an island that regularly flooded. Archaeologists don’t think the location is a coincidence. archaeology.org/issues/march-a…

Siberia may seem like a harsh place to call home now, but 8,000 years ago, it was a paradise for Neolithic hunter-gatherers and fishers. Many, evidently, wanted in on the action—and that caused problems. Hence, the world’s oldest known fortresses. archaeology.org/issues/january…

Trouble ahead, trouble behind, and you know that notion just crossed my mind” 😉 The Dead performed “Casey Jones” for the final time on this day in 1993 at the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York. Always a sure-fire crowd-pleaser, the song was played over 300 times throughout the band's career. Enjoy a clip from this performance, as featured in the ‘Grateful Dead Movie.’

For biologists and archaeologists studying the peopling of the western Pacific, the remote archipelago of Palau has long posed a vexing puzzle. About 3200 years ago, Southeast Asian seafarers known as the Lapita pushed east into the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean, hitting nearly every habitable isle in that corner of the globe from New Guinea to Fiji and Tonga. As they did so, they left behind artifacts of their culture, including pottery stamped with distinctive geometric patterns. But on Palau, there’s not a single shard of Lapita pottery—and the island’s inhabitants speak a language that’s distinct from the tongues spoken on other Pacific islands. So who were the first Palauans, and where did they come from? A new study suggests an answer. Learn more: scim.ag/3PqCkqS

The Scottish archaeologists had to work fast once they found that a storm had uncovered 2,000-year-old footprints in the clay on Angus Beach. They mapped the site, took casts of the prints—and then, the tides and winds destroyed the ancient ground. archaeology.org/news/2026/02/2…
