I feel insane. We had the chance to STOP this law but no one cared. Now everyone cares after it went through. It’s terrible, but it’s also a lesson in why we need to actually stop and kill surveillance laws and government overreach on certain tech BEFORE it passes. Call ur reps!

Mind you it’s not age gating, it’s IDENTITY GATING. There is no such thing as “age verification” it’s ID verification. I think we need to stop using the term age verification bc it’s an industry term that obfuscates the reality of what’s happening.

I repeat, you *can* demand preemptive bans on corporate surveillance price manipulation before it gets entrenched.

Maryland will become the first U.S. state to ban "surveillance pricing" in grocery stores. Grocers are starting to use electronic price tags that can increase/decrease the price of goods by using the customer's personal data, and Maryland thinks this should be illegal.

This type of coverage is so irresponsible. We’re not “doing it anyway,” the GOVERNMENT is enacting these laws and many have not passed yet. This is how mainstream media outlets reframe key issues and manufacture consent for bad policy. Love the Verge, but what the hell fam!
