To someone who needs to hear this. I captured the 3h30m bus at last Sunday’s Two Oceans Marathon, arriving with 2 minutes to spare. Observe everyone in this video, and it should remove every excuse you have for not running. These are grandmothers, senior citizens, people of all categories, pushing themselves. One of us had travelled with her mother to see what her son does. What she saw left her feeling so young and challenged. Running, or any other mission, is first mental before it becomes physical. Decide, commit, focus, fail, go again, and succeed.

PSETA CEO, Ms Bontle Lerumo, presented on future skills and competencies, highlighting the evolving demands of the public sector workforce. She underscored that “the future wants a public servant with transdisciplinary skills,” emphasising the importance of capabilities such as basic digital skills, strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, data analysis, and change management. Ms Lerumo further stressed that the future calls for a culture of continuous self-learning and upskilling to ensure relevance in a rapidly changing environment.

PSETA Chief Operating Officer, Ms Shivanthini Nagalingam-Potter, delivered an insightful session on how PSETA drives skills development and professionalisation within the public sector. She provided an overview of the organisation’s core functional areas, including Administration, Skills Planning and Research, Learning Programmes, Special Projects and Partnerships, and Quality Assurance, all working together to strengthen a responsive and capable public service.

Mr Tebatso Mabitsela delivered a presentation highlighting provincial skills development interventions and progress made. He noted that skills gaps identified in the Provincial Skills Development Plan (PSSP), as supported by PSETA, were effectively used to guide targeted interventions in the province. He further reported that a total of 343 beneficiaries were reached through these programmes, including over 200 public servants and more than 80 traditional leaders, demonstrating the impact of aligned and demand-driven skills development initiatives.

PSETA Accounting Authority Chairperson, Dr Kennedy Maimela, delivered a strategic overview, outlining the organisation’s vision and key priorities in advancing skills development within the public sector. He closed his address by reaffirming PSETA’s ambition to be a driving force in skills development, positioning the organisation at the forefront of building a capable, responsive, and future-ready state.

Dr Martin Sehlapo, DDG: Institutional Development Support, delivered a compelling welcome address at the PSETA Stakeholder Engagement Roadshow in Limpopo. He underscored the importance of building a capable state by first understanding its needs, noting that “we need to understand what the state needs in order to help it become capable, and to identify gaps.” This message strongly resonates with PSETA’s mandate to support responsive, demand-led skills development that strengthens public sector performance and capabilities.
