@ArmyMFL We teach both equally in the BGE, both languages right through to the end of S3. Spanish is hugely more popular in the senior phase though, to the detriment of French - we have not been able to run a senior French class this year due to low numbers but we have 3 senior Spanish.

Looking to hear from schools (preferably in Scotland, but UK too) which have changed the main language taught from French to Spanish. Has this had a negative impact on French?

@JoshanParmar Completely sympathise. Even in advance it is ridiculous. I was looking at booking a 7 night cruise for October. Cruise was £600pp. Train from Edinburgh to Southampton was £300pp. Decided I couldn’t afford it.

If you’re driving a car, you don’t need to book in advanced. So if we want people to use trains - we need to make it *at least* as flexible as that.
I’m frankly tried of this “managed decline” of public services.

@thefish64 @JohnBaldLangLit @ZHighflyer I agree, if you put the clues in English & hide the words in French, you hear pupils muttering the French over and over as they look for it. Not a tool for every lesson but once in a while it can have its use. Plus sometimes all students need a short, quiet ‘break’ activity!

@JohnBaldLangLit @ZHighflyer They certainly don't aid communication or sentence construction, but an argument can be made that they get pupils to focus on spellings. In German, you can create a word search with lots of ie and ei words. Eg. difference between Wein and Wien. Beine and Biene.

Word searches are an utter waste of time, wherever thay are used. They aid neither communication, not sentence construction. @ZHighflyer would have had her work cut out.

@thefish64 I felt sorry for the students, a lot of them have a private tutor! I had time to walk and have a quick chat. They didn’t enjoy German and the books showed no progression, I mean they had WORDSEARCHES in their book!! 😳😱 this is a grammar school!!! I hate word searches.

@olicav Maybe you need to invent Paper-more-like! Hope you find a solution - I liked the look of the remarkable but like you mentioned, the interface with other devices isn’t as seamless as I’d like.

@MrsMurphyML Thanks. I've had an iPad, pencil and Paperlike for a number of years. It's OK but not as paper-like as I'd like.

Does anyone use reMarkable2? I've been tempted in the past but now I've seen this upgrade, I think I would prefer it to my iPad. Any reviews from you?

@ArmyMFL Not sure about what is being said now but when I did my PGDE (Glasgow 2015) we were told we were only able to qualify initially in one language and during probation year we could get the teaching hours in another language and get signed off in that at the end of prob year.

Anyone else worried about the number of student teachers completing teacher training with only one language? Very hard to accommodate student teachers who only have one of the languages we teach.
