アメリカに来たばかりのころ、白人の家庭にホームステイをしていたんだけど、当時の僕は全く英語が話せなくてアメリカ人にビビりまくっていた。なにを言っているのかわからないからホストファミリーともあまり顔を合わせずに部屋に引きこもっていたんだけど、5歳のホストブラザーのKyleはお構いなしに話しかけてきた。彼にとって言葉は重要ではなかったのだろう。「英語もわからないし、友達もいない。これからどうしよう...」と落ち込んでいる僕の部屋にやってきてはたくさん話をしてくる。するとつられて僕もポツリポツリと話すようになった。僕のはじめての英語の先生。それからは部屋に鍵をかけて入ってこれないようにしました。僕は1人でいるのが好き。
