Numida Launches in Rwanda to Empower Small Businesses with Fast Digital Loans
Kigali Fast-growing fintech firm @NumidaRwanda has officially launched its operations in Rwanda, marking its third expansion in East Africa after Uganda and Kenya, as it seeks to improve access to finance for small businesses.
The company plans to support more than 5,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Rwanda by the end of 2026, targeting a segment that continues to face challenges in accessing affordable credit despite high levels of financial inclusion.
According to data from the National Bank of Rwanda ( @CentralBankRw ) about 92% of the population can access financial services. However, many entrepreneurs particularly in the informal and semi-formal sectors still struggle to secure loans.
Numida, whose operations are approved and recognized by the National Bank of Rwanda, offers unsecured digital loans through its mobile application. Applicants are required to provide a national ID, a mobile money number, a smartphone, and proof of business activity.
The platform enables users to access financing within 24 hours often in just a few hours with funds sent to their mobile wallets and no collateral required. Interest rates average around 10%, positioning the service as a relatively accessible option for small business owners.
Across Uganda and Kenya, Numida has already disbursed more than $150 million in loans, supporting over 100,000 SMEs.
Regulators in Rwanda continue to emphasize consumer protection, urging financial service providers to ensure transparency, clearly communicate loan terms, and disclose all associated costs to help borrowers make informed financial decisions.
Numida’s entry into the Rwandan market reflects a broader shift in the country’s financial sector from expanding access to services toward driving meaningful usage and economic impact while contributing to efforts aimed at empowering entrepreneurs and strengthening the SME ecosystem.
