@MilesMcCra27560 @scottsantens You express a very common misunderstanding about UBI. It's universal starting money, not universal extra money. It's a nonzero floor beneath which nobody can fall, and upon which everyone can build. It's redistributive, not a money printing operation.

Here's Nebraska's governor saying he doesn't want $18 million going to low-income kids so they can eat, because "he doesn't believe in welfare." A big reason unconditional basic income is so important is because of politicians like Jim Pillen. Politicians should not get to decide that money shouldn't go to meeting the basic needs of families and should instead go to businesses like theirs. UBI takes politicians out of the "money for basic needs" loop. The government would no longer get to decide how basic needs money gets spent. Instead, we all would ourselves, each and every one of us.

This has always been and will always be one of the dumbest things to say in response to a policy that both Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek supported, and one that has existed in Alaska for over 40 years. It's just a childish reply to pretty much everything, not just UBI.

7 years ago today, on October 11, 2016, my wife and partner Deia Schlosberg (@deiafilm) was thrown in a North Dakota jail for legally filming a climate protest action from a public road, kept in a cell for 3 awful days, and then charged with 45 years worth of felonies. Shortly after, the #freedeia petition spearheaded by her film colleague @joshfoxfilm went viral, bringing attention and pro bono legal support (from the one and only Ron Kuby) first to her situation, and then to the other filmmakers who'd been arrested and/or charged for being present to film the #shutitdown climate action, in which 5 activists halted all oil sands flowing into the US from Canada for a day and set up years of legal battles arguing for the necessity defense as an avenue to address climate change with the urgency it demands. It was a audacious and controversial demonstration, taken to show solidarity with the ongoing Standing Rock conflict at that time. It was also about a week after I'd proposed to Deia, and we'd been waiting a little to tell people, so I had the unique experience of breaking the news (to her parents and then mine) the simultaneous news of our engagement and her imprisonment.
