"Dick Tracy" was released on this day in 1990. Sensational comic book film (based on characters created by Chester Gould) by producer/director Warren Beatty and screenwriters Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. Highlights: Extraordinary production design by Richard Sylbert; eye-popping cinematography by Vittorio Storaro; knockout Danny Elfman score. While "Dick Tracy" was the 9th highest grossing film of 1990 in North America (it actually held the record as the largest live action debut weekend in Disney history for years afterwards), a lackluster global box office reception put the brakes on potential sequels. Personally, I find "Dick Tracy" to be a magnificent cinematic achievement. Superb performances (especially from Al Pacino), and remains a wholly unique take on the comic book genre. One of my ten favorite films of 1990.

The entire room is almost motionless, but the tension builds with just a glance and a voice. Although this is a secret meeting of the Spectre organization in Rome, much of the grand interior that the audience sees was actually constructed on stage at Pinewood Studios. Dennis Gassner wanted the room to exude a sense of power, majesty, and terror, like a dark court. The room's design was inspired by the Royal Palace of Caserta, one of the largest palaces in Europe. The massive columns and high vaulted ceilings were created to make Bond appear small amidst the power of Spectre.
