THE US IS RAMPING UP TROOP DEPLOYMENTS TO THE MIDDLE EAST UNDER DONALD TRUMP, RAISING FEARS THAT TENSIONS WITH IRAN COULD ESCALATE INTO A FULL-SCALE GROUND CONFLICT DESPITE ONGOING DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS.

Lately discussions have once again intensified about putting pressure on Ukraine to surrender part of its territory to the russians without a fight in exchange for “peace” and “guarantees.” What’s particularly noteworthy is that the talk is specifically about a part of Ukrainian land that holds enormous military-strategic importance for our defense — Donetsk Oblast. That is precisely why it is worth reminding everyone why this is unacceptable and will not bring peace. First, the idea that if russia receives the rest of Donetsk Oblast, it will sell this to its own society as a victory is nothing more than a fantasy. Equally fantastical is the notion that russia — which has spent hundreds of billions of dollars on the war against Ukraine, lost hundreds of thousands of soldiers, suffered sanctions and retaliatory strikes, and essentially reduced the entire meaning of its national existence to the destruction of Ukraine — will suddenly calm down and be satisfied with just a piece of territory it does not yet control. Second (and this follows directly from the first point), the part of Donetsk Oblast that russia still does not control serves as a major obstacle to any further deep advance into Ukraine. It consists of two urbanized belts (one running north from Pokrovsk, and the other from Kostyantynivka through Kramatorsk-Sloviansk to Lyman and beyond), interwoven with a system of fortifications, heights, and rivers. If Ukraine hands this territory over, it will open the door for the russians to advance much more easily and rapidly further into the country. This can clearly be seen on the map, where the purple line marks the administrative border of the oblast. If the russians reach this line — whether by force or through deception and concessions on Ukraine’s part — Barvinkove will immediately come under threat. The russians will then be able to launch attacks toward Izyum (the north) and toward Lozova (the west). Lozova is the key to an operation against Pavlohrad from the north and a critical point that would allow them to push deeper into Kharkiv Oblast. The terrain along the Lozova–Barvinkove–Izyum line, even with hastily prepared fortifications, is far worse for defense than the northwestern part of Donetsk Oblast. And third (which follows from the second point): the russians need the rest of Donetsk Oblast not for “peace,” but for continuing the war. They know they will suffer heavy losses trying to seize this territory by force, so they will do everything possible to obtain it through political pressure and blackmail. This territory would become a powerful staging base for a further offensive deep into Ukraine and for new attempts to destroy Ukraine. Therefore any option in which Ukraine voluntarily withdraws from its own land in this sector without a fight makes no sense. It would be suicide. No matter how noble the intentions with which those who want to force us into this try to cloak their demands, the result is the same. Exposing our defense in exchange for “guarantees” guarantees only one thing: a rapid deterioration of our defensive positions and a clear advantage for the russians.
